Understanding Rosacea : More Than Just Facial Redness
April is Rosacea Awareness Month, an initiative supported by the National Rosacea Society to improve education and reduce stigma around this chronic inflammatory skin condition.
Rosacea is often misunderstood as simple facial flushing or “sensitive skin.” In reality, it is a persistent inflammatory disorder that primarily affects the central face; cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead.
Common symptoms include:
Persistent redness
Flushing episodes
Visible blood vessels
Acne-like bumps and pustules
Burning or stinging sensations
Rosacea tends to follow a pattern of flare and remission. Without treatment, it can gradually progress. Early recognition and appropriate management can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life.
Importantly, rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene, and it is not contagious.
If you notice redness that does not resolve or worsens over time, a dermatologic evaluation can help determine whether rosacea may be the cause.
