Common Rosacea Myths… And What’s Actually True
April is Rosacea Awareness Month, an initiative supported by the National Rosacea Society to improve education and reduce stigma around this chronic inflammatory skin condition.
Despite how common rosacea is, misinformation remains widespread.
Myth 1: Rosacea is just adult acne.
While rosacea can cause inflammatory bumps, it differs from acne in both cause and treatment approach.
Myth 2: Only fair-skinned individuals develop rosacea.
Rosacea can affect all skin tones. In deeper skin tones, it may present more subtly and is sometimes underdiagnosed.
Myth 3: It’s caused by poor hygiene.
Rosacea is an inflammatory condition influenced by genetics, immune response, and vascular reactivity; not cleanliness.
Myth 4: Nothing can be done.
There are effective medical and procedural treatments available that significantly reduce symptoms.
Education reduces stigma. Patients should never feel embarrassed about a medical skin condition.
