Derm Myth of the Week : Neosporin is Recommended by Dermatologists

Neosporin is not what we recommended to patients because it contains neomycin, bacitracin, and polymyxin B; ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or skin irritation. Rather than promoting healing, it may lead to redness, itching, rashes, and even delayed wound recovery.

Instead of Neosporin, we recommend Vaseline. Vaseline helps create a moist healing environment that supports the skin’s natural repair process without the risk of allergic reactions or irritation caused by topical antibiotics.

Vaseline contains white petrolatum Usp (100%) which is…

  1. Highly refined and purified to meet USP (United States Pharmacopeia) standards. That means impurities are removed and reactive compounds are eliminated.

  2. Free of common allergens. Unlike topical antibiotics white petrolatum contains:

    • no preservatives

    • no fragrances

    • no antibiotics

    • no botanical extracts

  3. Able to protrect but not penatrate. White petrolatum sits on top of the skin instead of soaking in. Because it does not penetrate deeply, it does not disrupt skin cells or trigger inflammation. It functions as an occlusive barrier, meaning it:

    • seals in moisture

    • protects the wound

    • reduces water loss

  4. Supportive to the skin barrier. Well-hydrated skin is less prone to itching, redness, and inflammation. By preventing transepidermal water loss it helps maintain:

    • hydration

    • barrier integrity

The next time you have a cut or skin abrasion, we recommend using Vaseline to support proper healing.
