Derm Myth of the Week : Only people with lighter skin get sun damage
It is a common misconception that only people with fair/light skin can get sun damage. However, everyone can get sun damage and skin cancer. Darker skin may show fewer sunburns, but UV rays still cause hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and cancer risk.
Melanin is a natural pigment in the body that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes. While melanin does provide some natural protection by absorbing and scattering UV radiation; the protection is limited. Darker skin tones have an estimated sun protection factor (SPF) of about 8–13, while lighter skin tones may have an SPF of around 3. For proper protection, dermatologists recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
